Mission Beach is one of those places where life always looks good: the ocean is right there, the sun is always out, and people always seem to be happy and having a great time. But if you’re reading this, you know that’s not the whole story. Something hasn’t felt right for a while. Maybe it’s depression that won’t quit. Maybe it’s anxiety that follows you everywhere. Maybe it’s something you haven’t been able to name yet.
At Alter Behavioral Health, we help adults from Mission Beach and across San Diego who are done trying to handle everything alone. Our residential mental health facilities in Southern California offer focused, real care in a place that actually feels good to be in.
When you walk in for the first time, you’ll notice straight away that it is far from what a hospital looks like. There are no cold hallways, no fluorescent lights, and no feeling like you’re just another file for us. Our facility was built to feel calm, comfortable, and safe, because that’s what healing actually needs.
Mission Beach is a tight-knit, lively community. When the people here need mental health support, they want the kind of care that respects their privacy and actually fits their lives. Our residential program is close enough that families from San Diego, Pacific Beach, or Ocean Beach can visit without a long trip, but separate enough that you can fully step away from everyday noise and focus on yourself.
While you are here at Alter, we also think hard about what comes after. Before you leave, we put together a real aftercare plan which includes local therapist connections, outpatient options, and support resources that make sense for life back in San Diego. You won’t just be handed a sheet of paper and sent home.
Worrying about cost is one of the most common reasons people delay getting help. We don’t want that to be your reason. That’s why at Alter, we work with most major insurance providers, and our team will give you a clear, honest breakdown of what your plan covers. No hidden surprises or pressure will be there.
You’ll work with the same clinicians from day one to your last day. No being passed around or repeating your story to a new face every week.

People don’t arrive with the same issues, and so their treatment plans should be different too. Before anything is decided, we take time to understand where you’ve been, what hasn’t worked, and what you want to achieve.
We treat conditions including depression, anxiety, trauma and PTSD, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, ADHD, drug and alcohol addiction, co-occurring disorders, and detox and withdrawal.
Depending on what you need, your plan may include:
Days here have a rhythm to them. There is enough structure to feel stable, and enough breathing room to feel human.
Mornings start gently. Therapy happens when your mind is actually ready for it. Group sessions are small, so you can speak up or just listen, depending on the day. Meals are unhurried. Evenings include optional creative or mindfulness activities. And there’s quiet time built in on purpose because that’s a non-negotiable, part of how healing works.
Life skills run through everything: sleep, communication, and managing your routine. By the time you leave, you won’t just feel better. You’ll know how to stay that way.
The hardest part is picking up the phone. After that, we make everything as easy as possible: a quick conversation, an insurance check, and a few questions to figure out what you need. If we’re the right fit, you could start treatment within days.
You don’t need to be at your lowest to start. You don’t need a perfectly worded explanation. If life feels like too much right now, that’s enough for us to work with.
