Levels of Care for Anxiety Disorders

Levels of Care for Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders can make it difficult to carry out routine tasks and activities. For people with anxiety, fear and worry are normal – but those nerves typically do not go away easily or at all. They eventually begin to interfere with the ability to focus and succeed in work, school, and relationships. There are different levels of care for different levels of anxiety.

Crisis Stabilization for Anxiety

This is the most intense level of care. It is needed after a major crisis event has occurred like an acute anxiety attack. The intention is to respond to the crisis and stabilize the client as soon as possible. Alter Behavioral Health’s crisis stabilization provides clients with room and board, medication management, 24/7 nursing, treatment planning services, and any medical care they might need.

During crisis stabilization, clients will participate in:

  • Medication management
  • 24/7 clinical supervision
  • Individual therapy sessions
  • Evidence-based treatment
  • Holistic healing modalities

This level of care is very important to the well-being of those with anxiety because it provides near instant relief and support from the struggles of each client. These programs typically last one to three weeks, before transitioning into a residential treatment program.

Residential Mental Health Treatment for Anxiety

Residential or inpatient anxiety treatment also requires clients to live onsite at Alter’s treatment centers. This allows for a structured and intensive treatment environment, and can last for several weeks or months – depending on client needs.

Strategies used for residential anxiety treatment include:

  • Medication management
  • Individual psychotherapy
  • Group therapy & social integration
  • Family therapy
  • Experiential activities
  • Life skills & communication

These programs will be used in a combination determined by the doctors and therapists assigned to each client. What works for one client will not work for another. Sometimes family therapy is not needed but life skill work is, or vice versa. The benefit of residential treatment is that therapies and coping mechanisms can be integrated into daily routines around the clock.

Once residential anxiety treatment is completed, clients will graduate to an outpatient program. These outpatient programs are designed to provide support and treatment, while also encouraging the client to begin immersion back into their personal routine and community.

Outpatient Programs for Anxiety

There are two types of outpatient programs for anxiety. Intensive outpatient treatment and partial hospitalization programs are both options for clients looking to live at home and still get support from Alter’s team.

Partial hospitalization programs (PHP) are the more dedicated outpatient treatment style. It is full time treatment where clients live at home but get anxiety treatment for six to eight hours a day.

Partial hospitalization programs often integrate the following methods into treatment:

  • Medication management
  • Weekly 1:1 psychotherapy
  • Psycho-education groups
  • Experiential therapy twice a week

You can adapt each PHP to the specific needs of each client, just like other levels of care. If even less hands-on care is needed, intensive outpatient treatment offers an alternative.

Intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) is the lowest level of care offered by Alter. It allows clients to live at home while still getting a high caliber of care. Clients typically spend nine to fifteen hours a week in intensive care.

Clients can expect a combination of the following programs when attending intensive outpatient treatment for anxiety:

  • Medication management
  • Clinical therapy
  • Mindfulness skills
  • Outdoor activities

These modalities are intended to put previous treatment learnings into execution. Clients can immediately take what they have learned and apply it to real life situations. Residential treatment sets the foundation for successful outpatient program outcomes.
