You’re Searching for Help — Here’s What You Actually Need to Know About Age Requirements at Alter
You might know that feeling when it’s 2 a.m., when you’re exhausted, endlessly scrolling through mental health websites, just hoping to land on a place that actually gets it, finally. Especially when you’re not searching for yourself, but for your kid, your little brother, or your niece, who you’d do anything for. Every site looks the same until you finally spot the question that you were looking for: “Do you treat adolescents?”
If you landed on this page trying to figure out whether Alter Behavioral Health is the right place for a teenager you care about, here’s the honest answer, and some guidance on where you can turn next.
Why the 18+ Focus Actually Matters
At first, it might seem like a downside, but there’s an important reason behind it: mental health treatment isn’t the same for everyone, and it really shouldn’t be either.
Helping adults with their mental health is just very different than helping teenagers. It’s not like what teenagers go through isn’t real or not worthy of treatment. It’s just that Adults have a lot on their plates, like work stress, relationship stress, financial stress, years of unprocessed trauma, substance use that may have developed over a long period of time, and all sorts of complicated issues that build up over time.
The therapies we use at Alter: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), EMDR and Brainspotting, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and others are chosen because they really work for what adults are going through.
The point is not to leave anyone out but to make sure the care everyone gets is age-appropriate and what fits them the best.
What Alter Actually Offers Adults
If you or someone you care about is 18 or older and dealing with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, trauma, PTSD, schizophrenia, ADHD, borderline personality disorder, substance use, or even a mix of these, we have built different kinds of support for adults facing tough times.
What those look like:
Crisis Stabilization is available at our San Juan Capistrano and San Diego locations for people who are in an acute mental health crisis and need immediate, structured support instead of going to the hospital. It’s 24/7 supervised care for when things have gotten to a breaking point, and stability needs to come first.
Residential Mental Health Treatment is offered at our Irvine and Capo Beach centers. This is for adults who need to leave daily life behind for a while and focus on getting better in a supportive, structured place. You have a dedicated therapist, regular individual sessions, group support, psychiatric care, and a treatment plan built just for you and your needs.
The Women’s Facility in Orange County is a place made for women who want to work on healing in a space designed for them.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) consultations are available in Laguna Beach. These programs are for adults who are stepping down from full-time care, or who need strong support while still living at home.
PHP is six hours a day, five days a week. IOP is three hours a day, either three or five days a week.
The Part That Often Gets Overlooked: You Don’t Have to Figure This Out Alone
Reaching out for mental health support can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate this process by yourself.
At Alter, we have a dedicated admissions team ready to listen deeply, answer all your questions, and help clarify what kind of care might be right for you or your loved one. If someone calls and it turns out Alter isn’t the right fit, whether due to age or specific needs, you will still not be left without options. The admissions staff will help you figure out where to go next, provide clear guidance, and connect you with reputable programs that may better suit your situation or those for someone who is under 18.
And if you’re not in Southern California, don’t worry about the distance. There’s also a travel concierge service for people who aren’t local to Southern California. If distance has felt like a barrier, it doesn’t have to be; the team can help with logistics from wherever you are in the country.
If You’re Still Reading, This Might Be the Moment
It’s completely understandable to spend hours sifting through treatment center websites before ever picking up the phone. Reaching out for mental health support isn’t a small step—it’s a big decision, and it can feel daunting. But sometimes, the most important move is simply starting a conversation. You don’t have to commit to anything right away. Just having an honest talk with someone who understands the process can help you make sense of your options and what might be possible.
If you’re looking for help as an adult or for someone who’s under 18, giving us a call will be totally worth it.
Even if Alter isn’t the right fit, our team will make sure you’re not left without guidance. We can connect you with trusted resources for younger individuals, so you walk away with a clear next step.
