Dr. Araz Tawfique, M.D. is an award-winning, Board Certified psychiatrist in La Jolla, CA with over ten years of experience working with people of diverse needs. He pursued his true passion for psychiatry and completed his psychiatric residency training at the University of Reno, Las Vegas. A San Diego native, he returned to Southern California to receive additional training in mental health, and start his private practice. His specialties are psychiatry and psychotherapy, which are techniques that facilitate a better understanding of thoughts, feelings, and motivations. His approach explores the interplay of biology, psychology, and sociology in shaping individuals and their relationships.
Dr. Tawfique’s experience includes delivering comprehensive addiction treatment at substance abuse centers in San Diego.

When a person is struggling with severe mental health symptoms, it’s important that they receive immediate and specialized treatment. At Alter, we understand the urgency of crisis intervention and provide 24/7 individualized care to each client.
Our comprehensive treatment approach includes a combination of therapy, medication management, and holistic services.Our goal is to help clients stabilize their mental health symptoms and lay a strong foundation for long-term recovery. We also make sure that we reach out to our clients’ loved ones, keeping them informed and involved in their treatment journey.
Clients stay for an average of 7-21 days, and often transition to Residential Mental Health Treatment (RTC) to continue their care.
From the moment clients arrive, they receive a personalized treatment plan that includes medication, therapy sessions, daily evaluations, and 24/7 monitoring to ensure any crisis is promptly addressed.
We also offer group activities such as interpersonal development classes, anger management sessions, yoga, sound baths and experiential outings.
Schedules are thoughtfully planned to keep our clients at our San Juan Capistrano facility engaged, motivated and committed to their recovery journey.

Following our program, if your loved one hasn’t stabilized within 7 to 21 days, our specialists conduct assessments. In such cases, we recommend transitioning to a lower level of care like residential treatment or PHP partial hospitalization at one of our nearby facilities for continued support.
Yes, our facility offers 2 private rooms and 2 shared rooms to accommodate varying preferences and needs for privacy during the crisis stabilization process.
Family involvement is key in our approach. We make it a priority to reach out to the family within 72 hours of admission, ideally within 24 hours. If admission occurs on a weekend, rest assured we will make contact promptly on the next business day to keep you informed and engaged in the care process.
