Drug & Alcohol Detox and Withdrawal Management

What is Medical Detox?

Medical detox is a professional treatment that manages the physical symptoms of drug and alcohol withdrawal. People who use drugs and alcohol regularly in high amounts can become physically dependent – meaning their bodies eventually adapt and adjust to the presence of these substances. Quitting drugs and alcohol abruptly after becoming physically dependent can disrupt the body’s chemistry and trigger a range of mild to severe withdrawal symptoms. In some instances, drug and alcohol withdrawal can lead to death when taking place outside of a controlled medical setting.

Alter Behavioral Health partners with facilities that offer evidence-based detox treatments as part of a dual diagnosis program for mental health and addiction. Detox treatment programs minimize the risk of withdrawal-induced complications. Patients who choose to detox can receive quality treatment in a safe, controlled inpatient residential environment where there are no distractions. FDA-approved medications are used to reduce and control withdrawal symptoms, while nutritious meals, yoga, and mindfulness meditation can be used to complement the therapeutic effects of detox treatment.

Detox programs are customized for each patient based on factors such as the substances that were used, the length of time of drug use, and the presence of underlying health conditions. The length of your detox program will vary based on these same factors, and may last anywhere between a few days to several weeks. Nurses and doctors will monitor you closely around the clock for the entirety of your detox program to ensure you remain as comfortable as possible.

The Benefits of Medical Detox

If you are undergoing dual diagnosis treatment, medical detox offers a countless number of physical and psychological health benefits. A top benefit to undergoing detox is being able to safely withdraw from drugs and alcohol while facing a lowered risk of life-threatening complications such as organ failure, relapse, and overdose. Another top benefit is being able to recover from drug and alcohol dependence while facing less pain and discomfort than you would when detoxing at home or using non-evidence-based treatments.

Medications Typically Used in Medical Detox

Scientific evidence indicates that FDA-approved detox medications can help patients experience a safe recovery and achieve long-term abstinence from drugs and alcohol. The detox programs at our partner facilities use a wide range of medications and protocols proven to effectively reduce withdrawal symptoms and the risk of complications.

Heroin and painkiller dependence can be safely treated using methadone or buprenorphine — both of which can eliminate or reduce opioid withdrawal symptoms. Alcohol dependence can be treated using benzodiazepine medications that control and minimize symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. Those who are dependent on other substances may be given one or more other types of medications to control specific symptoms.

Patients dependent on certain prescription medications like benzodiazepines may not be given other medications during detox, but instead are put on a tapering schedule in which the dosage amount of their prescription drugs are slowly reduced over time. Tapering helps reduce the severity of withdrawal symptoms in instances where it may be dangerous to abruptly discontinue a substance.

What Happens During Medical Detox?

As detox is only offered as part of a comprehensive dual diagnosis treatment program, the plans are tailored to each patient to achieve the best possible health outcome. Some patients may need prescription medications to manage withdrawal symptoms long term, while others may only need a few days spent relaxing in their rooms to experience a full recovery. Our staff members will collaborate to develop a personalized treatment plan for you based on your unique situation and health status.

After your detox treatment ends at our partnering facility, we will help you transition into our treatment program for mental health that uses science-based behavioral therapies to guide you through overcoming mental health conditions associated with  addiction.

Our team at Alter Behavioral Health is devoted to helping you experience a safe, fulfilling recovery from drug dependence and achieve a healthier, drug-free lifestyle.
