Client Success Story

“Spiritually, mentally and physically at a rock bottom, I cried out for help. Alter answered the call. Detoxing is (at least for me) a painful uncomfortable time, yet this program managed it with grace and diligence. This created trust in my care for when the real heavy lifting began.

To the future addict and alcoholic that is considering this program. You are good enough, no you are great enough. Choose to live in courage, not comfort, and understand that is a journey of progress not perfection. You are worthy and this program will guide you in the best way.

It is with great pleasure that I award Alter 5 Stars!”

How Detoxing from Substances Impacts the Family

The process of a family member detoxing can have significant impacts on everyone. First, there may be emotional strain as family members witness their loved one going through physical discomfort and psychological distress during detox, and the stress of managing the detox process and its associated challenges can contribute to heightened tension and conflicts among family members. However, it’s important for families to come together to provide support, encouragement, and understanding during this difficult time, as a united front can greatly enhance the individual’s chances of successful recovery. Sending your loved one to detox can significantly improve outcomes and ensure a safe environment for them.

Family Involvement in the Treatment Process

The client’s family, assuming it is clinically appropriate to be in touch with them, is kept updated as to the client’s admission and progress in treatment. If appropriate, family therapy is utilized once the client has successfully detoxed and if they are willing to participate in family sessions. Families are also kept aware of client’s discharge plans.

Frequently Asked Questions about Detox & Withdrawal Management

What is detox & withdrawal management?

Detox is the process of safely removing substances from the body while managing the physical withdrawal symptoms. It is typically the first step in addiction treatment and is aimed at helping individuals achieve a substance-free state before transitioning to further treatment interventions.

Withdrawal management, also known as withdrawal symptom management, is a key component of the detoxification process. Withdrawal symptoms can vary depending on the type of substance used, the severity of addiction, and individual factors, and they can range from mild to severe. Withdrawal symptoms may include physical symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, sweating, tremors, and headaches, as well as psychological symptoms such as anxiety, depression, irritability, and cravings.

The goals of detox and withdrawal management are to:

  • Safely remove substances: Detox helps individuals safely eliminate drugs or alcohol from their system, reducing the level of substances in the body to a point where withdrawal symptoms can be managed effectively.
  • Manage withdrawal symptoms: Withdrawal management involves monitoring and addressing withdrawal symptoms as they arise, providing medications and supportive care to alleviate discomfort and minimize the risk of complications.
  • Ensure safety and comfort: Detoxification is conducted under the supervision of medical professionals who are experienced in managing withdrawal symptoms and complications. Medical supervision ensures the safety and well-being of individuals undergoing detox and provides support and reassurance throughout the process.
  • Prepare for further treatment: Detox serves as a preparatory phase for individuals seeking further addiction treatment, such as counseling, therapy, and support groups. Achieving a substance-free state through detox allows individuals to engage more effectively in ongoing treatment interventions and support their recovery efforts.

People who use drugs and alcohol regularly in high amounts can become physically dependent – meaning their bodies eventually adapt and adjust to the presence of these substances. Quitting drugs and alcohol abruptly after becoming physically dependent can disrupt the body’s chemistry and trigger a range of mild to severe withdrawal symptoms. In some instances, drug and alcohol withdrawal can lead to death when taking place outside of a controlled medical setting.

Medical detox offers a countless number of physical and psychological health benefits. A top benefit to undergoing detox is being able to safely withdraw from drugs and alcohol while facing a lowered risk of life-threatening complications such as organ failure, relapse, and overdose. Another top benefit is being able to recover from drug and alcohol dependence while facing less pain and discomfort than you would when detoxing at home or using non-evidence-based treatments.

Medical detox treatments at California Rehab Campus are tailored to each patient to achieve the best possible health outcome. Some patients may need prescription medications to manage withdrawal symptoms long term, while others may only need a few days spent relaxing in their rooms to experience a full recovery. Our staff members will collaborate to develop a personalized treatment plan for you based on your unique situation and health status.

First, our medical staff will review and evaluate your medical history and talk to you about your addiction so they can identify and choose treatments that may work best at treating your substance use disorder. Withdrawal symptoms usually set in within 24 hours of the last alcoholic drink or drug usage. By then, you may already have received one or more medications to prevent, reduce, or relieve your symptoms. Our nurses and doctors will monitor your vitals every 15-minutes, 24 hours a day to make sure you stay safe and to reduce the risk of complications like seizures.

After your detox treatment ends, we will help you transition into a drug rehab program that uses science-based behavioral therapies to guide you through overcoming psychological addiction.

Our team at Alter Behavioral Health is devoted to helping you experience a safe, fulfilling recovery from drug dependence and achieve a healthier, drug-free lifestyle.

Scientific evidence indicates that FDA-approved detox medications can help patients experience a safe recovery and achieve long-term abstinence from drugs and alcohol. Our detox program uses a wide range of medications and protocols proven to effectively reduce withdrawal symptoms and the risk of complications.

Heroin and painkiller dependence can be safely treated using methadone or buprenorphine — both of which can eliminate or reduce opioid withdrawal symptoms. Alcohol dependence can be treated using benzodiazepine medications that control and minimize symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. Those who are dependent on other substances may be given one or more other types of medications to control specific symptoms.

Patients dependent on certain prescription medications like benzodiazepines may not be given other medications during detox, but instead are put on a tapering schedule in which the dosage amount of their prescription drugs are slowly reduced over time. Tapering helps reduce the severity of withdrawal symptoms in instances where it may be dangerous to abruptly discontinue a substance.
